The six zones of Chandigarh, namely tourist spots, markets, open spaces and parks, institutional areas, bus stops and parking areas will be soon connected with the Public Bicycle Sharing Project of the smart city. It will now become easier to move places on a bicycle within the Tricity. Giving a brief about this project, the Municipal Corporation emphasized putting a special focus on these zones and this project shall begin in January 2019.
The authorities have come up with an idea of providing the facility of sharing a bicycle in order to boost this project and make public habitual to this new trend. The bicycle sharing system shall be under security or subscription for bikes. For an entire year, the subscription fees is of a nominal amount of Rs 200.
This project has the following two major objectives:
- To encourage last-mile connectivity, and promoting low-carbon mobility along with the awareness of efficient and effective public transit system.
- To promote non-motorized transport, especially for short trips.
K K Yadav, Municipal corporation commissioner-cum-CEO of Chandigarh Smart City Limited Company said that the project has been approved by the board of directors of the company and is awaiting the issue of the proposal requested to the interested bidders.
Here’s hoping that the smart city project will make the Tricity cleaner and its people fitter.
