15-year-old Jaanvi Singh and 17-year-old Laavanya, young girls from Chandigarh have been strongly inspired by the Bollywood movie ‘Padman’, in which actor Akshay Kumar was cast to portray the life of social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham. It left a strong impact on the life of these two teenagers who decided to launch a hygiene campaign for girls living in slum areas of the city. The girls have named it ‘Spot Free’ .
While other teenagers are busy posting Instagram stories, this duo is on another mission, which is making and distributing of hygienic sanitary pads to the underprivileged girls living in the slum areas. They initially kickstarted the campaign by spreading awareness among these unprivileged girls, educating them about major health issues and the benefits of using sanitary napkins during mensuration.
They shared with ANI how they were motivated after watching the movie ‘Padman’ and decided to distribute the snaitary napkins among girls who cannot afford to buy. However, eventually, this turned out to be much costly and thus, they began making them on their own. Adding to this, they also told that each pad now costs them Rs. 2 and they are all set to share this skill with their own board school friends.
Along with being women leads, they also played an equal part in the conservation of the environment. This teenage duo made packets containing 10 sanitary napkins each and used newspaper rolls to pack them in order to avoid use of plastic bags.
The pads are then distributed among the underprivileged girls and women in slum areas.
Way to go, girls! You have surely made the Tricity proud.
